The Dog Massage Course

Before you begin

Human touch may not be something that all dogs enjoy or something that they seek out.

Dogs and touch.

Think about how dogs interact with each other. They do not touch each other the way that humans touch them. The way humans touch dogs is often not enjoyed by dogs but is only tolerated. Always check with your dog first to see if they want to be touched and always start the massage in an area of your dogs body where they enjoy being touched.

When to massage?

Massaging your dog is supposed to be an enjoyable experience for you both. It's an opportunity for you both to relax, take some time out and enjoy each other's company. If you are frustrated or angry now is not the best time.

Getting ready

Set the mood.

Find a place where you and your dog both feel calm and comfortable. Use cushions pillows and rugs and set up and area where you will both be able to relax. If your dog is small the massage can take place on your lap. If your dog is larger you may need to move onto the floor, a lounge or bed.

How much pressure?

As a general rule the size of the dog is relative to the amount of pressure you would use when massaging. Larger dogs usually like a little more pressure while smaller dogs usually like things a little gentler. A good rule of thumb is to start off gentle and gradually increase the pressure. Watch your dogs body language, they will let you know when they are enjoying and what they are not.
